Student Steel Bridge Competition

Design. Fabricate. Build. Compete.

Overview

The Student Steel Bridge Competition challenges students to transform structural engineering knowledge into a real, buildable steel bridge. Working as a team, students interpret competition rules, develop and analyze a structural concept, prepare fabrication drawings, manufacture the bridge, and assemble it under timed competition conditions.

The completed bridge is evaluated through load testing, construction speed, weight, stiffness, economy, efficiency, and aesthetics. The result is a multidisciplinary learning experience that connects structural analysis and steel design with fabrication, project management, teamwork, and communication.

Technical Snapshot

  • Activity Type: National student design competition
  • Organizers: AISC and ASCE
  • Primary Material: Structural steel
  • Typical Bridge Span: Approximately 20-ft scale-model bridge
  • Design Load: Approximately 2,500 lb, subject to annual rules
  • Student Work: Design, analysis, detailing, fabrication, assembly, and testing
  • Performance Measures: Construction speed, lightness, stiffness, economy, efficiency, cost estimation, and aesthetics
  • Program Home: Florida Poly ASCE Student Chapter
  • Technical Home: PolySDL – Structural Design Lab
  • Activity Status: Program in Development

The Design Challenge

Each year, students respond to a new bridge scenario with defined geometric, structural, fabrication, and construction constraints. The team must:
  • Interpret the official rules and site conditions
  • Generate and compare alternative bridge concepts
  • Analyze structural behavior and predict performance
  • Design connections and modular bridge components
  • Prepare drawings and fabrication plans
  • Manufacture and trial-assemble the bridge
  • Develop a safe and efficient timed-construction strategy
  • Test, evaluate, and continuously improve the final design
Success requires more than a structurally adequate bridge. Students must balance stiffness, weight, constructability, speed, cost, reliability, and aesthetics—much like engineers working on a real project.

Our Mission

To provide Florida Poly students with a sustained, student-led and faculty-mentored experience in which structural engineering principles are applied through collaborative design, fabrication, construction, and testing.

Our Vission

To establish the Florida Poly Student Steel Bridge Team as a signature experiential-learning program that develops technically capable, creative, safety-conscious, and collaborative engineers.

Our Long-Term Goal

The long-term goal is to build a sustainable competition program within the Florida Poly ASCE Student Chapter, supported technically through the Structural Design Lab. The program will preserve knowledge from year to year, develop future student leaders, strengthen relationships with industry, and prepare teams to represent Florida Polytechnic University at regional—and ultimately national—competition.

Competition performance is evidence; student development is the purpose.

Building the Florida Poly SSBC Program

The Florida Poly Student Steel Bridge Program is being developed as more than a single-year competition project. Its proposed framework includes:
  • A student-led team supported by faculty mentorship
  • Progressive student roles from new member to team leader
  • Structured design reviews at key project milestones
  • Safe and documented fabrication procedures
  • Collaboration with structural-steel professionals and industry partners
  • Annual knowledge transfer between outgoing and incoming students
  • Continuous improvement based on testing and competition experience
The program’s institutional home will be the Florida Poly ASCE Student Chapter, while the PolySDL Structural Design Lab will serve as its technical and experimental home
